The Spirit of Venice

Vocal hits by Flemish composers such as Clemens, Willaert and Janequin were eagerly used in 16th century Venice as basic material for new compositions. The original melodies were enriched with virtuosic embellishments. Beautiful examples of this ars diminuendi are to be heard in this programme, and the BRISK members also add their own diminutions after historical examples. Music by the Venetian composers Bendusi, Gabrieli and Mainerio will be combined with arrangements of music for strings by Vivaldi. Willem Wander van Nieuwkerk, Calliope Tsoupaki, Bart Visman and Saskia Coolen composed small interludes which create fresh and often humorous moments in the programme.

The CD The Spirit of Venice was released in January 2010.

The press about this programme:

“…it will be the memory of the outstanding virtuosity and professionalism of these talented players that endures…” Early Music Review, 2009

“…Wenn etwas den Begriff hochvirtuos verdient, dann BRISK , übermutig blasen sie alle Klischees und Vorurteile über die Blockflöte fort…” Schwäbische Post, 2009

“…a little gem, also recommended for recorder haters…” Luister, 2010
