Composers’ food – The Fitzwilliam Virginal Book

BRISK Recorder Quartet Amsterdam & Guus Janssen, virginal

BRISK and Guus Janssen draw their inspiration from the Fitzwilliam Virginal Book, a collection of virginal music kept in a small folio album in the Fitzwilliam museum in Cambridge. The 209 pages with compositions in this small book are a veritable treasure-chest of keyboard music and give a good picture of English musical life in the second half of the 16th and the beginning of the 17th century. In this programme, dances and attractive variation works on famous English songs are alternated with impressive and sometimes unpredictable fantasias. With arrangements for four recorders, modern improvisations and unexpected combinations of instruments this music sounds like new again.

Registration of the composition Estampie by Guus Janssen in the programme Vrije Geluiden on the Dutch Television d.d. 9 december 2012
